Player Styles: The Strong, the Weak, and the Ugly

T here are several categories in which to put an opponent’s style of play. In addition to the ones listed, there can be many hybrid styles.

• Serve and volley player

• Aggressive baseliner

• Slicer-hacker

• Left-hander

I’ll go into each style further in the next points. Once you have decided upon a general category your opponent fits into, you can begin to devise a game plan to use against them and determine which shots you will need to compete effectively against them. The better your game plan, the more likely it is that you will be prepared mentally through all three phases of the match: the start, the middle, and the closing. It is important that you have practice partners who simulate this variety of styles so you can gain experience in how to play against them in actual match play.

“I played and won some long matches in front of big crowds. It was my confidence that grew first, and that helped my strokes.”
